Abstract
This paper assesses India and Tamil Nadu's progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from 2015 to 2024, focusing on environmental, social, and economic sustainability. As a major emerging economy, India has made notable strides in poverty reduction, healthcare, education, gender equality, and renewable energy. However, challenges such as income inequality, malnutrition, and limited healthcare access, particularly in rural and marginalized areas, remain substantial obstacles. Tamil Nadu has surpassed national averages in education, maternal and child health, and food security, and has become a leader in renewable energy, particularly wind and solar power. Yet, the state faces ongoing issues like coastal erosion, water scarcity, and pollution. Both India and Tamil Nadu also contend with urban-rural disparities, particularly in access to essential services like water and energy. Gender inequality continues to manifest in violence, wage gaps, and political underrepresentation. Environmental concerns, such as continued reliance on fossil fuels and the impacts of climate change, pose risks to long-term sustainability. This paper identifies key gaps in infrastructure, governance, and equitable service access, offering recommendations to address these challenges. A holistic approach that integrates social, economic, and environmental considerations is crucial for achieving the SDGs. Additionally, the paper discusses the proposed 18th United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG18), which focuses on space debris and the sustainable use of Earth’s orbit. Drawing inspiration from SDG14 on marine conservation, SDG18 aims to reduce orbital congestion, encourage off-planet expansion, and use space-based solutions to address global challenges like energy, water security, and sanitation.
