Abstract

College students’ mental health has been a pressing concern among universities given that a lot of mental illnesses’ first onset is during college period. However, little research has examined the help-seeking behavior of Filipino college students to date. This study assessed whether mental health literacy and spirituality significantly predict attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help among college students in a state university. A total of 774 college students from different year levels and curricular programs served as respondents to the study. A survey was conducted, and three research instruments were used to measure the variables. The design of this study was a quantitative correlational approach. Data were analyzed using Pearson r Correlation Coefficient and Logistic Regression Analysis to show the relationship among the variables. Results indicated that respondents tend to have low levels of mental health literacy, high levels of spirituality, and unfavorable levels of attitude toward seeking professional psychological help. In terms of the relationship among variables, there was a positive small correlation between mental health literacy and attitude toward seeking professional psychological help, whereas it was shown that there was a negative small correlation between spirituality and attitude toward seeking professional psychological help. Furthermore, looking at the predictor variables, both mental health literacy and spirituality significantly predict attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help.
