Life is a long journey and ageing is the final part of the journey . It is a natural phenomenon forming part of the long – drawn cycle of growth and decay . So, it is an inevitable phase of human life . In earlier times elderly persons were given special respect and high positions in society because of their experience and wisdom . But such traditional values have been totally changed with the advancement of civilization . Old values have gone by the board and new ideas have taken their place , transforming the face of the society in a radical way. With old age many psychosocial problems arise in human life The chief problems may be analysed to show how the problems affect the life of the elderly . Financial insecurity caused by a steep decrease in income is a serious problem and mounting medical expenses make matters worse in old age . Many elderly persons are dependent on family members for their daily living and with inadequate monetary support they are considered to be a burden by both the family and the society. Deteriorating health and medical problems are also common factor in old age , physical strength and ability declines with advancing years . Apart from physical ailments the elderly suffer from various psychological and emotional problems like a feeling of loneliness , of depression and deep despair. Physical abuse , neglect and exploitation are various ways in which many older persons suffer at the hands of their family . This is the post- retirement age , the income is substantially reduced and now the pater familia’s or the head of the family turns into a dependent person . The children embark on their new lives and get separated from their parents because most of them are employed in places far way from home . This puts the elderly in a state of isolation . As a consequence of changes in the family patterns , and various (other) socio-economic and cultural factors most of the aged persons are looked after in institution , especially in Western countries. The concept of old age home is relatively new in Asian countries . The loneliness , the neglect and the lack of proper holistic care are rampant in many places and most of the older people have no choice but to come to terms with the existing realities since nobody seems to be really interested in taking care of their various needs. Naturally , such a situation causes the elderly to live in the old age home which is a little less miserable and less unbearable than their homes .
