Abstract: This study investigated the relationship between personality, defense mechanism, and cognitive distortion. A sample of 100 participants completed the MBTI Personality Inventory, the Defense Mechanism Inventory, and the Cognitive Distortions Questionnaire. Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to assess the relationships between the three variables. The results showed that there was a negative relationship between personality and defense mechanism, and between personality and cognitive distortion. This means that as personality changes, defense mechanisms and cognitive distortions are likely to change in the opposite direction. For example, people with more neurotic personalities are more likely to use immature defense mechanisms and engage in cognitive distortions. On the other hand, people with more secure personalities are more likely to use mature defense mechanisms and have fewer cognitive distortions. The findings of this study have important implications for understanding the role of personality in mental health. The results suggest that people with negative personality traits may be more likely to experience mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. This is because they may be more likely to use defense mechanisms and cognitive distortions as a way to cope with stress and anxiety. The lack of a significant relationship between defense mechanism and cognitive distortion suggests that these two variables are not directly related. However, it is possible that they are indirectly related through personality. For example, people with more neurotic personalities may be more likely to use immature defense mechanisms, which in turn may lead to more cognitive distortions. These findings have implications for both research and practice. For researchers, they suggest that future studies should examine the relationship between personality, defense mechanism, and cognitive distortion in more detail. For practitioners, they suggest that interventions that target personality may also have an impact on defense mechanisms and cognitive distortions.
