Abstract
Abstract: The small scale industries play a vital role in the economic growth of the country. A major share almost 40% of the gross industrial value added in the Indian economy is being contributed by this sector. The SSI sector is low capital intensive and high labour incorporation nature so that it has made significant contribution to employment generation and regional balancing with rural industrialization. Small Scale Industries units are generally complementary to large and medium scale units as ancillary units. SSIs have acquired a prominent place in the socio-economic development of the nation. This sector recorded positive growth trends even during periods when other sectors of the economy experienced either negative or nominal growth. The small scale industries in India are facing many challenges to compete with large scale industries. In the present scenario, the SSIs are facing many challenges i.e., lack of finance, lack of skilled labor, lack of infrastructure, and most important challenge is lack using technology. Therefore there is an urge to understand the role of SSIs in economic development of the country and the challenges faced by SSIs in India. It enables to the government form the new policy initiatives for promoting SSIs in India. The present study intended to understand the importance of small scale industries, to know the nature of small scale industries and to understand the problems of small scale industries.
