Abstract
The article's main focus is on how Mahatma Gandhi created a conception of India in South Africa between 1893 and 1914 through a process of partially fictitious exchange between South Africa and India. He made an effort to follow political happenings in India as he started a career, first as a spokesperson and subsequently as the head of South Africa's large and diversified Indian community. Although unavoidably utopian in nature, his endeavour to "inhabit two spaces at the same time" provides an intriguing case study of "long distance nationalism" and the ways in which it was entangled with various cosmopolitan ideologies. He has played a crucial role in the development of Indian diaspora whether it is a matter of political rights, civil rights, cultural identity are most important of all the issue of racial discriminations across the globe. It would not be out of place to view Mahatma Gandhi as the pioneer of integrating the dispersed Indians worldwide in such a setting. He has actually increased the prominence of the "Indian Diaspora" in the Indian public eye.
