This paper examines the correlations between internal control systems and financial performance at two major Nigerian banks - GTBank and Access Bank. Quantitative correlation analysis was conducted between control factors like environment, risk assessment, and monitoring and performance metrics including return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), and efficiency ratios. The results showed positive correlations between control environment, risk management, information systems and profitability. However, excessive monitoring and bureaucratic controls had negative associations, indicating potential over-control. Corporate governance factors like board expertise improved performance, while concentrated executive incentives were detrimental. The findings highlight the complex interdependencies between internal controls, governance, regulation and bank performance. They underscore balancing oversight with operational efficiency through tailored control systems.
