Abstract

From the lens of gender studies, this study examines memories of illness, hunger and death: an account of Olokoro women’s life stories, personal experiences and healing in the post Biafran war. The central argument of the study is that the physical and psychological injuries inflicted on women during the war still lingers on, and that the inability of the Nigerian state to attend sincerely to these injuries have decapitated the ability of women agency to contribute meaningfully to nation building and national integration of the Nigerian state. The study further investigate the sufferings of the women, impact on their societal relevance and as well the integration of the Nigerian state. The study adopted primary and secondary materials. The primary sources includes 20 key informant interviews with women with lived experiences of the war and who have been decapitated by the war; as well as community leaders, youths and women civil society groups. The study was qualitatively ansalysed. Findings reveal that many of such women, the civil war period is a dark abyss concealing memories and events they would rather not remember, haunted as they are by events of horrific proportions; and that despite of the carnages and horrible moments brought by the war, the government strategies for reconciliation, rehabilitation and reconstruction have not yielded the expected results. The study concludes that government and civil society groups must partner to ensure that the widows of those slained as well as those women disabled as a result of the war should be given adequate attention in order to enhance peace building and national integration.
