Abstract This essay is an attempt to explore the dynamics of the Spiritual Exercises in the first place. It examines the the first Two Weeks of the Exercises in detail. The third and the fourth Weeks are to strengthen the experience the exercitants had. The dynamics follow the three phases of mystical experience, namely, purgative, illuminative and unitive. The third and the fourth Weeks are in the illuminative phase which are not given consideration here because of the reasons given above. In the second part of the essay the effects of psychotherapy and spiritual experience are dealt. Whereas the effects of psychotherapy are mostly for personal self-consciousness, the effects of spiritual experience urge the experiencer to move out into society. Thus, the similarities and the dissimilarities between the two are explored.
