Abstract: Abstract Background A hospital is an institution providing surgical and nursing care to the sick and injured. The raise in novel corona virus gave rise to the contingency situation globally, Contingency is a potential negative event that may occur in the future such as natural disaster, pandemic etc. Nursing department is considered as the key department to implement the prevention and control work; hence, implementing the contingency management strategies for commanding, coordinating and allocation of nursing workforce will ensure timely, orderly, safe and efficient treatment. Aims To study the preparedness, planning efficiency, education and training protocols and the measures exhibited to manage the personnel development during the period of contingency. Methods This descriptive study involved structured interview with 100 nurses from a tertiary care teaching hospital. Results The findings of the study revealed the organization’s preparedness, education and training to the nurses undertaken, organization’s plan and the personnel development measures ventured by the organization. Conclusion It is found that the organization was well prepared in the short span of time complying with the various rules and regulations amended by the State and Central government. Most of the standard operating procedures and protocols were in place in accordance to handle the pandemic. Personnel management was also not an easy task to the healthcare industry amidst the extreme anxiety amongst the healthcare workers.
