Abstract: Abstract A review of subtitles of Indian films shown in foreign festivals from the very first Sant Tukaram (1937, Venice Biennale) to a more contemporary title such as Shwaas (Oscars 2004) brings out a range of variations in the choices possible during the process. “Meaning” in cinema is a multi-layered entity. It is an amalgam of of the spoken, the audible and the visual. In the process of subtitling one is often hard put to transmit this amalgam and is forced to make a choice to prioritise one of its composite elements. The “untranslatable” in this case finds its origin in a multiplicity of factors such as the inherent multilingualism in Indian cinema, the gestural complexities arising out of sociocultural specificities and dialectic variations, differences in audio-visual conditioning of the primary viewer (Indian) and the secondary viewer (non-Indian), etc. I would like to present a diachronic study of subtitles of iconic Indian films since the 1930’s to the 2000’s that will underline these choices, their ethnocentric or anthropocentric nature, followed by an analysis about the inherent untranslatable elements.
Keywords: intertitles, cinema, untranslatable, subtitles, ethnocentrism, anthropocentrism, spatiotemporal elements, lingua-cultural loss, history of Indian cinema, evolution of subtitles
