Abstract

Abstract – Kumhar means potter community. The contribution of Kumhars in the development of art and crafts in Indian society is very important and they are playing a very pivotal role in the development of sculptures, clay toys, various idols of gods and goddesses, useful utensils, decorative crafts, etc. Kumhar community is known as the earliest community associated with clay and terracotta works. In India, since the Vedic period, the Kumhar is the community associated with and working in clay. The potters of Chhattisgarh are generally called Kumhar, Kumbhkar, Prajapati, Chakradhari, and Pare, mainly associated with clay and terracotta. The Kumhars of Chhattisgarh were used to throw through earthen Chak (wheel) to shape the clay in various pots and other utensils. But nowadays using a motor wheel for throwing is common. Not all potters are used to do pottery works, some work on clay sculptures of gods and goddesses and some are on decorative items. This article covers various arts and crafts styles of Chhattisgarh which are being made every year in festivals and rituals, and this circle of potter works is continued for centuries. like in – Pola, Janmashtami, Ganesha Chaturthi, Navaratri Shardiya and Chaitra, Diwali, Karvachouth, Holi, Akshay Trutiya, Marriage, AnnaPrasanna, Summer, Temples, Useful and other decorative items. Apart from this art and crafts, their aesthetical aspect commercial aspects and the social status of potters in the state are discussed.
