प्रवासन केवल लोगों का एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान पर जाने की प्रक्रिया नहीं है, बल्कि यह जनसंख्या की संरचना को बदलने की एक मूलभूत प्रक्रिया है। यह किसी भौगोलिक क्षेत्र में अंतर्निहित प्रघटना और स्थानीय संबंधों को समझने में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान देता है। प्रवास संस्कृति के प्रसार का एक साधन है और एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान पर जनसंख्या के पुर्नस्थापन का एक माध्यम है। प्रवासन से प्रभावित क्षेत्रों (मूल एवं गंतव्य क्षेत्र दोनों) में अवसरों के बदलते स्वरूप को दर्शाता है। एक नए स्थान पर प्रवास से सामाजिक और व्यक्तिगत समायोजन होता है। प्रवासी श्रमिक कुछ मात्रा में सामाजिक और आर्थिक स्वत्रंतता को अपने जीवन में सुधार का अनुभव करते हैं, लेकिन साथ ही कई प्रवासियों को कुसमायोजन के कारण अस्थिरता का सामना करना पड़ता है। प्रवास के माध्यम से समाज में तथा प्रवासी श्रमिकों के जीवन मे होने वाले परिवर्तनों एवं उनके प्रभाव का अध्ययन करना एक महत्वपूर्ण विषय बन जाता है। प्रस्तुत आलेख अनुभवात्मक अध्ययन पर आधारित है जिसमें असहभागी अवलोकन, साक्षात्कार अनुसूची, वैयक्तिक अध्ययन, केंद्रीय समूह परिचर्चा तथा अंतवस्तु विश्लेषण का प्रयोग किया गया है। इस आलेख में निर्माण क्षेत्र में कार्यरत प्रवासी श्रमिको के सामाजिक, कार्य की दशा, शिक्षा एवं स्वास्थ्य, महत्वकांक्षा और भविष्य की परिकल्पनाएं एवं उनके अन्तःसंबंध व नातेदारी संरचना के पहलुओं को जानने का प्रयास किया गया है।
