Abstract
Na Tathiba Ahal Ama (An Old Man who is Hard of Hearing) as an instantiation of two mentally handicapped interlocutors Abstract Dr. R.K. Nirmola Sana Asst. Professor Manipuri Dept. Assam University, Silchar, 788011 Email id: rjkmrsana280@gmail.com Moblie No: 9435201614, 9101559201 This paper deals with inner seriousness and sophistication of two characters of the novel both of them were depicted as mentally handicapped persons. That is why the novel is full of the revelation and elasticity of human mind as a continuous moving on of a stream. The continued flow of their thoughts buried deep in different layers of the subconscious and unconscious keeps on coming to their conscious through memory and recollections all in a flux of words. Thus the whole novel looks like a voyage and pilgrimage of the mind through consciousness in a world of fantasy and reverie. This gives rise to a rare artistic effect of the withdrawal from the external world into the flickering half-shades of the mind. At the end of the story one of the characters as narrator of the novel was found to be transformed into an old man of seventy six years who turned a deep ear to the serious situations of his country. He further projected himself as another handicapped who had hearing impairments indulging in the thought of death. He had a strong wish to die and wanted his descendants to be marked by a string of words - An old man who is hard of hearing. By taking into account the emphasis on human personality and the centrality of the human mind the novel is a fine instantiation of a peculiar handicapped characters.
