Abstract
The present study is an effort to portray the myth and modernity in the novel, The Palace of Illusions. Divakaruni has put an energy to describe Mahabharata through the perspective of Panchaali. The novel entirely explicates the whole life Draupadi like her unbelievable birth, her lonely childhood days, her deep bonding with Lord Krishna, her unforgettable attraction towards Karna and her marriage with five men. In English literature, the utilization of myth, mythological stories, retelling of mythology and the point of view of individual characters are portrayed as a new way of exploration. Mythology plays a predominant role in literature and in India. Many writers from English literature and especially Indian writers started to interpret the stories of mythology from different perspective. Chitra Banerjee has utilized myth as a tool to highlight the importance of tradition, custom and culture and ecology. In India, the term myth and mythology imbibed with some set of norms and principles and ethics which leaves way for meaningful and happy life. Because myth always consists with certain cultural, traditional believes in it. So, the stories of myth always would be the great inspiration for both men and women in the society.
