A study on Trends and Prospects of Trade among SAARC nations

One of the most significant trends in international relations in recent years has been the rise of regional trade blocs. Almost every country is a member of a bloc, and many are members of many blocs. Regional accords vary greatly, but they always have the goal of lowering economic barriers between member countries. SAARC was formed with the same objective. To improve the process of economic and social integration in member countries trade promotion became an active area of interest. Focusing on the analysis of South Asia Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) trade, the paper attempts to analyse the trends and prospects of trade among SAARC nations through calculating and analysing various integration indices. Services trade performance of SAARC nations has also been analysed which is mostly not taken into consideration in the existing literature. Trade openness has also been analysed among SAARC nations on the basis of the Trade-GDP ratio. A comparative analysis has also been made between intraregional trade in South Asia and certain other regional agreements. The paper concludes its results on the basis of data pertaining to years (1960-2019).
