Abstract

“. Among these Shudra people, there is a subgroup called the untouchable. These people are most unprivileged in economic, social, religious, and political aspects. To uplift their conditions, many social reformers, like Mahatma Kabir, Chaitanya, and others, raise the issue in society for reforms. But their condition remains the same. After the British entered India, educational opportunities were opened to this group of people. This paves the way for the emergence of leadership among themselves. One such leader was Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who himself was untouchable by birth and fought for the legal rights of this community. During colonial rule the three-round table conference were held in London to discuss the issue of participation of all communities in future Indian administration and political participation. Just like Dr. BR Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhiji also participated in the second-round table conference as a soul representative of the Indian National Congress. The end result of this discussion was the announcement of the communal award, which gives separate electorate rights to the Harijan and Girijan of India. But these provisions were opposed by Mahatma Gandhiji on the question of Hindu unity. A conciliatory formula was made between the caste Hindu and untouchable communities in the form of the Poona Pact.”
