Abstract

This dissertation investigates the relationship between health literacy and health information seeking behaviour among Uttaranchal College of Health Sciences Students in India. The study aims to examine the impact of health literacy on the respondents’ ability and willingness to seek health information. The research questions and hypotheses are presented, and the literature review highlights the theoretical and conceptual frameworks that inform the study. The study employs a quantitative approach, using psychometric inventories to determine the level of health information seeking behaviour and the degree of health literacy among the respondents. The data was collected from 217 undergraduate and master’s students, with a high number of respondents being undergraduate students. The data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. The results of the study indicate that there is a significant impact of health literacy on health information seeking behaviour and that health literacy and health information seeking behaviour are not dependent on age. There is a statistically significant relationship between sex (male or female) and health literacy, but not health information seeking behaviour in this sample of respondents. The results also indicated that having a close family member in the health profession or not does not impact an individual’s health literacy and health information seeking behaviour, but there is a statistically significant relationship between the program of study, health literacy and health information seeking behaviour. The study recommends that future research should tailor their research towards students below university education, as health and health behaviour should be taught to adolescents. This will help them understand their health as they grow and reduce the burden health issues place on the healthcare industry and society.
