Abstract

Background: Chemotherapy is a cornerstone of cancer treatment, involving the use of drugs to destroy cancer cells. Its primary goal is to stop the proliferation of malignant cells by targeting their ability to grow and divide. The development and optimization of chemotherapy have significantly improved cancer survival rates over the past several decades. Chemotherapy drugs, while essential for cancer treatment, are classified as hazardous drugs due to their potential to cause significant harm if not handled properly. This classification stems from their inherent properties that make them effective against cancer cells but also pose risks to healthcare workers, patients, and the environment. Title: A study to assess the effect of Structured Teaching Programme on knowledge on safety measures regarding handling of chemotherapeutic drugs among 3rd Year B.Sc. Nursing students in selected nursing colleges of Guwahati, Assam. Materials and methods: A quantitative research approach and one group pre-test post- test was adapted for the study. The study was conducted in 2 conveniently selected Nursing colleges of Guwahati Assam. The investigator used simple random sampling technique and under that lottery method was used to select 88, 3rd year B.Sc. Nursing students. A Structured self-administered knowledge questionnaire was used to collect the data. Result: The results revealed that before administration of structured teaching programme majority i.e. 70 (79.5%) of students had moderate knowledge, followed by 10 (11.4%) had inadequate knowledge and 8 (9.1%) had adequate knowledge whereas after administration of structured teaching programme majority i.e. 87 (98.9%) had adequate knowledge and 1 (1.1%) had moderate knowledge on Safety Measures regarding Handling of Chemotherapeutic Drugs. Findings showed that post-test mean knowledge score was 23.59±2.317 which was higher than pre-test mean knowledge score 13.76±2.324 with mean difference of 9.82. Findings also showed that there was significant association between pre-test level of knowledge and demographic variables such as gender and type of family. Conclusion: Keeping in view the findings of the study, it can be revealed that structured teaching programme on safety measures regarding handling of chemotherapeutic drugs was effective in improving the knowledge of the students.
