Abstract
Abstract Climate change, environmental degradation, resource depletion and increasing energy consumption have created an urgent need for institutions to reconsider conventional patterns of development and resource use. Libraries, traditionally regarded as centres of knowledge, learning and community engagement, can make an important contribution to sustainable development by adopting environmentally responsible practices. The concept of the Green Library extends beyond the construction of an energy-efficient library building. It encompasses environmentally responsible buildings, sustainable resource management, efficient use of energy and water, responsible procurement, reduction of waste, sustainable information technology, environmentally conscious library services and the creation of awareness among users and communities. Green librarianship also incorporates economic and social dimensions of sustainability, including inclusion, accessibility, community participation and equitable access to information. This article examines the concept, principles and major components of green libraries, with particular emphasis on academic libraries. It discusses sustainable library buildings and operations, green information technology, sustainable collections, waste management, environmental education and the role of librarians in promoting sustainability. The article also considers the relationship between green libraries and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Finally, it identifies challenges faced by libraries in implementing green practices and proposes practical strategies for developing sustainable academic libraries. The article argues that a green library should not be viewed merely as an environmentally efficient physical facility but as a comprehensive institutional approach in which sustainability becomes part of library planning, management, services and professional practice.
