गीता प्रेस, गोरखपुर पर उपलब्ध शोध प्रायः एक ही निष्कर्ष पर पहुँचता है कि इस संस्था ने बीसवीं सदी में एक मानक, उच्च-वर्ण, हिन्दी-भाषी हिन्दू सामान्य-बोध का निर्माण किया। यह निष्कर्ष सही है, पर अधूरा है, क्योंकि यह उस शब्दावली को स्वयं-स्पष्ट मान लेता है जिसमें संस्था ने अपना काम व्यक्त किया। यह शोध-आलेख उसी शब्दावली को अपना विषय बनाता है और पूछता है कि 'संस्कृति' तथा 'संरक्षण' गीता प्रेस के आत्म-वर्णन में कब और किन परिस्थितियों में केन्द्रीय बने। उपलब्ध तिथिवार साक्ष्य एक विशिष्ट कालखण्ड की ओर संकेत करते हैं। 1929 के शारदा अधिनियम के समय कल्याण ने सतर्क दूरी बनाए रखी, जबकि 1948 से 1951 के बीच वही पत्रिका हिन्दू कोड बिल के विरुद्ध एक सुसंगठित अभियान चलाती है और उसी दौर में 'संस्कृति के विनाश' की भाषा उसके शीर्षकों में आती है। 1948 का नारी अंक और लगभग 1950 का हिन्दू संस्कृति अंक, दोनों इसी विधिक संघर्ष के दस्तावेज़ हैं। आलेख का तर्क है कि 'संस्कृति-संरक्षण' का सूत्रीकरण उस क्षण की उपज है जब हिन्दू पारिवारिक विधि राज्य द्वारा पुनर्लेखन के लिए खोली गई। इसका पद्धतिगत परिणाम यह है कि शोधकर्ता का प्रश्न यह नहीं रह जाता कि गीता प्रेस ने किस संस्कृति का संरक्षण किया, बल्कि यह कि उसने 'संस्कृति' नामक श्रेणी का निर्माण किन उद्देश्यों से और किस विरोधी के सामने किया। आलेख अपने दावों की साक्ष्य-सीमा स्पष्ट रूप से अंकित करता है और आगे के परीक्षण का ढाँचा प्रस्तुत करता है। (Scholarship on Gita Press, Gorakhpur generally concludes that the press manufactured a normative, upper-caste, Hindi-speaking Hindu common sense during the twentieth century. That conclusion is correct but incomplete, because it treats the vocabulary in which the institution described its own work as self-evident. This article makes that vocabulary its subject and asks when, and under what pressures, 'culture' and 'preservation' became central to how Gita Press explained itself. The dated evidence points to a specific window. Kalyan kept a cautious distance from the Sarda Act of 1929, yet between 1948 and 1951 the same magazine ran an organised campaign against the Hindu Code Bill, and it is in this period that the language of cultural destruction enters its headlines. The Nari Ank of 1948 and the Hindu Sanskriti Ank of around 1950 are both documents of that legal conflict. The article argues that the formulation of cultural preservation was produced by the moment when Hindu family law was opened to statutory rewriting, and that it should therefore be read as a political speech act rather than as a continuous cultural programme. The evidentiary limits of each claim are marked explicitly, and a falsification test is specified.)
