Abstract
ABSTRACT Background of study Musculoskeletal disorders are among the leading causes of pain and disability worldwide. Patients with musculoskeletal pain frequently present with neurological symptoms such as hand numbness, tingling sensations, and weakness. Neck pain resulting from cervical spine disorders is a well-recognized cause of upper limb neurological symptoms. Increasing evidence also suggests that deficiencies of essential micronutrients, including Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, folic acid, iron, magnesium, calcium, and zinc, may contribute to peripheral neuropathy and chronic musculoskeletal pain. Aim To evaluate the association between hand numbness among patients with musculoskeletal pain, neck pain, and micronutrient deficiency using a case-control study. Objectives The study aims to compare patients with musculoskeletal pain presenting with hand numbness and those without hand numbness, assess the presence of neck pain, evaluate micronutrient status, and identify possible risk factors associated with neurological symptoms. Methodology A case-control study will be conducted among adult patients with musculoskeletal pain. Cases will include patients experiencing hand numbness, while controls will include patients with musculoskeletal pain but without hand numbness. Demographic information, clinical characteristics, neck pain assessment, and available laboratory investigations related to micronutrient status will be collected using a structured data collection form. Statistical analysis will be performed using appropriate descriptive and inferential methods. Result Among the 350 participants, 57.1% were cases and 42.9% were controls. Hand numbness was more common in individuals aged 41–50 years and was observed more frequently in females. Neck pain showed a strong association with hand numbness, with 84% of cases reporting neck pain. Vitamin D deficiency was the most common micronutrient deficiency, followed by Vitamin B12 deficiency. Patients with hand numbness also had greater pain severity and functional disability compared to the control group. Conclusion The study concludes that hand numbness in patients with musculoskeletal pain is strongly associated with neck pain and micronutrient deficiencies, particularly Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 deficiency. Early screening for nutritional deficiencies, along with proper evaluation of cervical spine disorders, can help improve diagnosis, treatment, and patient quality of life. A combined approach involving medication, nutritional supplementation, physiotherapy, and lifestyle modifications may provide better clinical outcomes.
