Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most rapidly increasing public health challenges worldwide. It is a chronic metabolic disorder that can lead to serious complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, and blood vessels. Lack of adequate knowledge and awareness regarding diabetes mellitus, its risk factors, lifestyle modification, self-management, and preventive measures may contribute to delayed diagnosis and increased complications. Comprehensive health education plays an important role in improving knowledge and awareness and promoting healthy practices among adults. Aim: The present study was conducted to assess the efficacy of a comprehensive education program on knowledge and awareness regarding diabetes mellitus and its prevention among adults in selected areas of District Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. Methodology: A quasi-experimental research design was adopted for the study. A total of 210 adults were selected, comprising 105 participants in the experimental group and 105 participants in the control group. Data were collected using a structured knowledge questionnaire and a Diabetes Mellitus Awareness Tool. The experimental group received a comprehensive education program covering general information, causes and symptoms, lifestyle modification, self-monitoring and management, complications, and preventive measures related to diabetes mellitus. The control group received routine care. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. Results: The findings revealed that the two groups were comparable at baseline. The pretest mean knowledge scores of the control and experimental groups were 13.23 ± 3.28 and 13.61 ± 4.32, respectively, with no statistically significant difference (t = 0.719, p = 0.473). Following the intervention, the experimental group demonstrated a significant improvement in knowledge, with a post-test mean score of 25.50 ± 4.54 compared with 13.09 ± 3.08 in the control group (t = 23.14, p < 0.001). Similarly, the pretest awareness scores of the control and experimental groups were 8.34 ± 2.91 and 8.80 ± 3.28, respectively, with no significant difference (t = 1.067, p = 0.287). After the intervention, the experimental group showed a significantly higher mean awareness score of 10.90 ± 3.56 compared with 8.68 ± 2.59 in the control group (t = 5.157, p < 0.001). In the experimental group, the proportion of participants with high awareness increased from 1.90% in the pretest to 29.52% in the post-test. A significant positive relationship was also observed between knowledge and awareness in the pretest assessment. Conclusion: The study concluded that the comprehensive education program was effective in significantly improving knowledge and awareness regarding diabetes mellitus and its prevention among adults. The findings highlight the importance of structured health education in promoting awareness, encouraging healthy lifestyle practices, supporting early prevention, and reducing the risk of diabetes-related complications. Comprehensive educational programs can therefore be effectively utilized by nurses and other healthcare professionals in community-based diabetes prevention and health promotion initiatives.
