Abstract
In Indian philosophy, one of the important topics of discussion among philosophers is their doctrine related to the theory of creation. Both theistic (orthodox / āstika) and atheistic (heterodox /nāstika) Indian philosophical schools have held different opinions regarding the creation and destruction of the world. Not only Indian philosophers but also Western philosophers have offered various perspectives on the creation and destruction of the world. Since the focus of my discussion here is on the role of atoms in the creation and destruction of the world according to both Indian and Western philosophers, other views are not being discussed, as they are not relevant to this context. In the Indian theistic school of Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika, the discussion on atomism related to the creation and destruction of the world is covered. On the other hand, in Western Greek philosophy, Democritus, Leucippus, and Epicurus have discussed atomism in relation to the creation and destruction of the world. The immense significance of atomic theory in modern science reflects the importance of atomism in the Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika philosophy. This is because the existence of atoms, which has been observed in scientific laboratories, was first discussed by the Indian forest-dwelling sage, Maharshi Kaṇāda in the Vaiśeṣika philosophy long ago. It can be said that the subtle and advanced atomic theory discussed in modern science has its roots in the atomic theory of Vaiśeṣika philosophy from long before, and there is no doubt about this. Although the subject of my research paper is atomism in accordance with Indian and Greek philosophy, I will not delve into the scientific aspects of atomic theory here. The main purpose of this research paper is to provide a comparative discussion of Indian and Greek atomism to explain the processes of creation and destruction of the world and to logically determine which theory is more acceptable in this regard.
