Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia – first introduced in his 1966 preface to The Order of Things and later expanded in the 1967 lecture “Of Other Spaces” (Des espaces autres) – defines physical sites that exist simultaneously within and outside dominant social norms. Unlike imaginary, idealised utopias, heterotopias are real, tangible locations – such as cemeteries, gardens, prisons and ships – that function as highly concentrated social microcosms, disrupting the conventional structures of everyday life. By serving as “other places” where all other real sites within a culture are simultaneously represented, contested and inverted, heterotopias expose the underlying power dynamics, social anxieties and cultural values of their respective societies. Drawing on Foucault’s spatial theory, particularly his famous example of the sailing ship to be “heterotopia par excellence,” this article analyses selected aspects of Monisha Rajesh’s travelogue Around the World in 80 Trains (2019) in the light heterotopia’s key principles. The main purpose is to show that the train space resonates with Foucault’s understanding of heterotopia and thereby constitutes a successful terrestrial equivalent to a sailing ship in a modern travel book.
