Historical narratives often intermingle with mythological tales, which are figurative stories passed down orally through generations which creates a distinction between history and mythology, where history is considered closer to the truth and mythology as closer to fiction. The origin, myths, and state formation of the Ahoms defined their rise as a dominant political power in medieval Assam. The Ahoms, who migrated from Southeast Asia to the Brahmaputra valley in the 13th century, brought various political and military systems that were essential for building and strengthening their state. The Ahoms established a well-organized administrative system and introduced the Paik system which helped them in maintaining a large, well-trained, and self-sustaining army. Their military strength defended their territory against numerous invasions, including those by the Mughals, Koch etc. These elements enabled the Ahoms to extend their rule across most of the Brahmaputra valley, creating the most powerful kingdom in the region, which lasted for almost six centuries. The Ahoms justified their rule through divine origin myths, often detailed in their historical accounts, the Buranjis. These myths presented the Ahom kings as descendants of divine beings, with the Buranjis depicting them as embodiments or descendants of deities like Indra, which grounded their authority in spiritual legitimacy. This chapter explains how mythology, history, and polity came together to establish the Ahom state and maintain its rule in Assam. It also emphasizes the role of myths, legends, and women in the social, political, and cultural development of the Ahom state. The Ahom legends hold a significant place in Assam’s cultural memory, shaping identity and unity among the modern Ahom population.
