Abstract
Padmanabha's 'Kanhadade Prabandha' occupies a significant place within the corpus of medieval vernacular literature produced in western India. Traditionally interpreted as a narrative of Rajput resistance against the expansion of the Delhi Sultanate, the text has often been read through the lens of Hindu-Muslim conflict. This article argues that such a reading obscures the broader political and cultural concerns embedded within the narrative. By examining Padmanabha's representation of Kanhadade, the recovery of the Somnath linga, the figure of Piroja, and the repeated invocations of epic and Puranic traditions, this study demonstrates that the text is fundamentally concerned with the construction of kingship, political legitimacy, and collective memory. Drawing upon the works of scholars such as Romila Thapar, Ramya Sreenivasan, Cynthia Talbot, and Richard H. Davis, the article situates *Kanhadade Prabandha* within the wider tradition of medieval Rajput political narratives. It argues that Padmanabha transforms a historical military defeat into a moral and ideological victory through literary strategies that celebrate Rajput values of honour, loyalty, sacrifice, and righteous rule. The text simultaneously preserves memories of loss and reimagines them as sources of dynastic prestige and legitimacy. Rather than functioning solely as an epic of resistance, *Kanhadade Prabandha* emerges as a sophisticated political text that sought to reinforce Rajput identity and kingship in a period marked by shifting power relations. The article further highlights the value of vernacular literary traditions as historical sources, demonstrating how they illuminate questions of memory, identity, and political imagination in medieval India.
