Abstract
The consumer movement in India stands as one of the most significant socio-economic reform movements in the post-independence era. Profoundly rooted in ancient administrative traditions and unceasingly reinforced by modern legislative frameworks, this movement has evolved from localized initiatives aimed at consumer awareness to a comprehensive legal and institutional structure that safeguards consumer rights. The forces of economic liberalization, globalization, digital commerce, and rapid technological advances have drastically transformed consumer markets, presenting both new opportunities and intricate challenges for Indian consumers. This article critically examines the historical progression, legislative framework, governmental roles, consumer rights and responsibilities, organizational growth, key achievements, ongoing challenges, and future trajectories of the consumer movement in India. It underscores the need for enhanced consumer education, stronger digital protection mechanisms, rural outreach expansion, and the promotion of sustainable consumption in the contemporary era.
