Abstract
Abstract Background: Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is one of the most common endocrine disorders affecting adolescent girls and women of reproductive age and is frequently associated with menstrual irregularities and reproductive health problems. Menstrual disturbances may serve as early indicators of underlying PCOD; however, inadequate awareness and delayed healthcare-seeking practices may influence early identification and management. Objectives: The present study aimed to assess the prevalence and pattern of menstrual problems among college-going girls, evaluate the level of awareness regarding PCOD and reproductive health, and examine health-seeking behaviour related to menstrual problems and PCOD. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 400 college-going girls aged 16–24 years in selected government colleges of Sundargarh Town, Odisha. Respondents were selected using convenience and purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire covering socio-demographic characteristics, menstrual problems, PCOD awareness, and health-seeking behaviour. Knowledge scores were categorized into low, medium, and high levels. Data were analyzed using SPSS software using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Results: Dysmenorrhea was identified as the most frequently reported menstrual problem, with 61.75% of respondents reporting its regular occurrence. Moderate knowledge regarding reproductive health and PCOD was observed among 48.5% of respondents, while 33% and 18.5% demonstrated low and high knowledge levels, respectively. Only 35.75% of respondents had consulted a doctor, and merely 7.5% had undergone medical screening for PCOD. Significant associations were observed between menstrual problems and knowledge level regarding PCOD (p<0.05). Awareness level was also significantly associated with health-seeking behaviour (χ²=18.30, p<0.001). Conclusion: The study findings indicate that menstrual problems are common among college-going girls and may serve as important early indicators of PCOD. Existing gaps in awareness and limited healthcare-seeking practices highlight the need for targeted educational interventions, awareness programmes, and early screening initiatives to promote timely identification and prevention of PCOD.
