Abstract Marriage in Indian society is traditionally regarded as a sacred institution associated with trust, companionship, dignity, and emotional security. However, beneath this socially idealized image often exists another reality shaped by patriarchy, coercive intimacy, emotional domination, and women’s silent suffering. The present study critically examines the issue of marital rape and domestic oppression in contemporary Indian society through feminist, literary, and socio-legal perspectives. The research particularly focuses on the normalization of forced intimacy, the denial of women’s bodily autonomy, and the emotional consequences of patriarchal marital structures. The study primarily analyzes Meena Kandasamy’s When I Hit You: Or, A Portrait of the Writer as a Young Wife alongside the OTT social drama Chiraiya in order to explore how literary and visual narratives represent emotional abuse, coercive relationships, and women’s psychological isolation within marriage. The paper further connects these representations with contemporary socio-legal debates, journal studies, and media reports concerning marital rape and domestic violence in India. The research incorporates feminist theoretical perspectives, especially radical feminism and materialist feminism, to examine how patriarchal systems regulate women’s sexuality, labor, and emotional existence within domestic spaces. The study also highlights the psychological and emotional impact of marital rape, including trauma, depression, fear, anxiety, and social isolation, as discussed in contemporary journal studies and public discourse. Through literary interpretation and socio-cultural analysis, the paper argues that marriage cannot truly remain sacred if it simultaneously denies women consent, dignity, equality, and emotional security. Ultimately, the research attempts to question the normalization of silence within marriage and emphasizes the urgent need to recognize women’s bodily autonomy and consent as essential foundations of marital relationships.
