Abstract
Abstract Skin and hair disorders have seen a marked rise in prevalence over the past two decades, particularly among urban populations. While dermatological research has largely advanced along pharmacological and procedural lines, there remains a significant gap in the literature concerning non-invasive, root-cause-oriented approaches. Yoga and Naturopathy, both of which operate on the principle of restoring physiological balance through natural means, have individually demonstrated promise in managing stress-related and lifestyle-induced conditions. However, their combined application as a therapeutic framework for dermatological health has received limited systematic attention. This review aims to consolidate existing evidence on the role of Yoga and Naturopathy in managing common skin and hair disorders, and to examine the mechanistic pathways through which these modalities may exert their effects. The review draws on published literature spanning clinical trials, observational studies, case reports, and theoretical frameworks from both contemporary biomedical research and classical texts of Ayurveda and Naturopathic medicine. Conditions examined include acne vulgaris, seborrheic dermatitis, alopecia, telogen effluvium, and stress-induced skin sensitivity. Yogic interventions reviewed include specific asana sequences, pranayama techniques such as Nadi Shodhana and Bhramari, and mind-body relaxation practices including Yoga Nidra. Naturopathic modalities covered include therapeutic dietary protocols, hydrotherapy, herbal applications, and structured detoxification practices. Findings from reviewed studies suggest that psychological stress is one of the most consistent upstream contributors to both skin and hair deterioration, operating through pathways involving cortisol dysregulation, gut-skin axis disruption, and systemic inflammation. Yoga-based interventions have shown measurable reductions in perceived stress, serum cortisol, and inflammatory markers in multiple controlled trials. These physiological shifts are directly relevant to dermatological outcomes, particularly in conditions where stress is a known aggravating factor. Naturopathic dietary interventions, especially those targeting micronutrient deficiencies and gut microbiome composition, have similarly shown associations with improvements in skin hydration, barrier function, and hair follicle health. When considered together, Yoga and Naturopathy appear to address dermatological conditions across multiple levels simultaneously, targeting the neuroendocrine, digestive, circulatory, and metabolic systems rather than the skin or scalp in isolation. This multi-system approach is consistent with the holistic framework both traditions are built upon, and stands in contrast to conventional treatments that are largely localised in their action. Despite encouraging findings, the current body of evidence has notable limitations. Many studies suffer from small sample sizes, short intervention durations, absence of control groups, and heterogeneity in outcome measurement tools. Standardised protocols are largely absent, making cross-study comparisons difficult. There is also a relative scarcity of research specifically targeting hair disorders through integrated Yoga-Naturopathy frameworks, with most available evidence focused on skin conditions or general psychosomatic health. This review concludes that the theoretical basis and preliminary clinical evidence for Yoga and Naturopathy in dermatological care is substantial enough to warrant rigorous investigation. Future research should prioritise randomised controlled trial designs, validated outcome measures specific to skin and hair health, and intervention protocols that are clearly defined and replicable. The integration of these traditional systems into mainstream dermatological practice holds genuine potential, not as a replacement for evidence-based medicine, but as a complementary strategy that addresses the root causes most conventional treatments tend to overlook.
