Abstract
This study proposes an optimized approach for design of canal network based on least cost path (LCP) method and GIS for Khadakwasla and Bhatghar Dam regions. Spatial data like Digital Elevation Model, slope, aspect, terrain roughness, drainage and land use land cover are integrated into the research to determine technical feasible and economical alignment of canals. The existing and proposed canal routes have been compared with respect to the various parameters like length of canal, balance of earthwork, suitability of terrain, cost of construction and its environmental impact. Over the period 2017 to 2024, LULC analysis reveals that there has been a considerable amount of land transformation, which is manifested in reduction in crop land and tree cover, and increase in built-up and rangeland areas, in particular, in Khadakwasla and Bhatghar catchments. Optimized alignment reduced the canal length of Khadakwasla canal from 47.80 km to 39.62 km and Bhatghar canal from 46.85 km to 37.28 km, thus providing routing efficiency. Also, the proposed method decreased the terrain roughness and construction cost index, which made the canal design more economical and sustainable. Earthwork analysis shows that both alignments provide for mild gravity flow and construction feasibility. In general, the GIS-LCP approach offers a scientific, transparent and data-oriented way of planning canals, which can help to lower construction costs, enhance the efficiency of water conveyance, minimize disturbance to the environment, and aid in the development of sustainable irrigation infrastructure.
