Abstract
The London Missionary Society was a major unit for influencing the education system in colonial Murshidabad between 1772-1946. The LMS introduced a new style of educations in that district by starting western style formal education. They founded several missionary schools, promoted vernacular educations encouraged native girls towards literacy. This study focuses on the impact of LMS as a pivotal catalyst for the educational reformation in the district of Murshidabad during the colonial period. Initially LMS was established in 1795 in Chinsurah but around 1824 they started their voluntary works in Murshidabad district.Historically, Murshidabad under colonial rule saw a shift from being an indigenous centre of learning to a centre of formal Western education. This paper will examine the strategic actions of the LMS, such as the opening of English and vernacular schools at Berhampore and Khagra, and their pioneering work in female literacy. Through the use of missionary literature and colonial records, this paper will investigate how the actions of the Society, which were originally intended for proselytizing purposes, inadvertently democratized education, making it possible for the emergence of a new middle-class intelligentsia. The paper will show that the LMS was instrumental in bringing about a change in the educational paradigm of the district from medieval religious education to a modern and organized system, which continues to influence the academic institutions of the region today.
