Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Bitter Gourd, Fasting Blood Glucose

Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to inadequate insulin production or reduced insulin effectiveness. Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) has been traditionally used as an herbal remedy for diabetes because of its bioactive compounds, including charantin and polypeptide-p, which exhibit hypoglycaemic and antioxidant effects. Aim: To assess the fasting blood glucose level among type- II diabetes mellitus patients in both the groups. To evaluate the effectiveness of bitter guard juice on control of fasting blood glucose level among type- II diabetes mellitus patients in experimental group. To find out the association between pretest scores of fasting blood glucose level among type- II diabetes mellitus patients with their selected socio demographic variables. Methods: A quasi- experimental non randomized equivalent control group design. The sample of the study was 40 type-II diabetes mellitus patients (20 for experimental group and 20 for control group) were selected through non probability purposive sampling technique in ETCM Hospital at kolar. Assessment of fasting blood glucose level by using glucometer includes the pretest and posttest blood glucose level. Results: The mean and standard deviation of the pretest and posttest fasting blood glucose levels among type-II diabetes mellitus patients. In experimental group mean is 185.1 and SD 7.9663 of pretest, mean is 85.65 and SD 12.9178 of posttest, whereas in control group mean is 188.55 and SD 6.629 of pretest, mean is 166.45 and SD 36.116 of posttest. The obtained “t” 26.5419 value is greater than the table value at 0.05 level of significance. Therefore, “t” value is found to be significant. Conclusion: The study concluded that there was a significantly effective. Thus, the administration of bitter guard juice was effective to control the blood glucose levels in type-II diabetes mellitus patients.
