This paper undertakes a comparative study of the Kamasutra attributed to Mallanaga Vatsyayana and the metaphysical poetry of John Donne to reinterpret the Indian aesthetics of love within a modern context. Though separated by geography, culture, and historical period, both texts articulate a profound synthesis of sensuality and spirituality, presenting love as an integrated experience of body and soul. The study challenges reductive and colonial misreadings of the Kamasutra as merely erotic literature and instead situates it within the Purushartha framework, where Kama operates in ethical balance with Dharma, Artha, and Moksha. Drawing on Indian aesthetic theory, particularly the concept of rasa, the paper argues that Vatsyayana envisions desire as a disciplined and mindful art capable of elevating human consciousness. Similarly, Donne’s poems such as The Ecstasy, The Canonization, and A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning dissolve the binary between physical intimacy and spiritual communion, presenting love as a metaphysical union that sanctifies human experience. Through comparative analysis, this study demonstrates that both thinkers conceive love as an aesthetic and transformative force that transcends temporal and cultural boundaries. In revisiting these works, the paper proposes a contemporary re-reading of intimacy as ethical, reciprocal, and spiritually conscious, offering a corrective to the fragmentation of relationships in modern society.
