Abstract
With significant ramifications for rural lives, especially in developing nations where populations heavily rely on climate-sensitive natural resources, climate change has become a major global concern. Rural communities' agricultural production, food security, job prospects, and economic stability have all been greatly impacted by rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and an increase in extreme weather events like cyclones, droughts, and floods. This essay aims to investigate how climate change affects rural livelihoods, pinpoint the main difficulties rural people confront, and evaluate the adaptation tactics used to deal with vulnerabilities brought on by climate change. The paper emphasizes how climate variability has increased livelihood insecurity among rural households by upsetting conventional farming practices, degrading soil and water supplies, and limiting access to common property resources. Due to insufficient resources, inadequate institutional assistance, and socioeconomic disparities, small and marginal farmers, agricultural laborers, fishermen, women, and landless populations are deemed to be the most vulnerable. Pressures on livelihood diversification and rural out-migration have also been exacerbated by climate-related difficulties. The paper also analyses the impact on various livelihood dimensions. The paper delves deeper into different adaption strategies at the policy and community levels. These include the use of indigenous knowledge systems, such as crop diversification, modifications to fishing methods, seasonal and distress migration, and reliance on unofficial coping mechanisms, as well as climate-resilient agricultural practices, diversification of livelihood options, and community-based natural resource management. Even if these tactics provide temporary respite, they are still mostly reactive and insufficient in the absence of strong governmental backing. The study highlights the critical need for climate-resilient rural development planning, reinforced social protection measures, and community-based adaptation initiatives by analysing policy-driven interventions like social protection schemes, access to climate information, and capacity-building programs.
