Abstract

Hematology, a rapidly evolving branch of medicine, focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders affecting the hematopoietic system. It encompasses a wide range of conditions, including anemia, coagulation disorders, hemoglobinopathies, leukemias, lymphomas, and other hematologic malignancies. Despite its importance, hematology often remains inadequately understood among some medical practitioners. Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) has transformed the treatment of hematologic malignancies and select benign conditions, offering improved survival and quality of life. However, awareness of BMT remains limited. Many patients and even healthcare professionals are unfamiliar with its two types—autologous (using the patient’s own stem cells) and allogeneic (using donor stem cells). This knowledge gap can lead to apprehension when BMT is proposed. Understanding the intensive pre-transplant process, which involves chemotherapy, radiation, and associated risks, is essential for setting realistic expectations. Aim: This study sought to assess awareness and understanding of BMT—its procedures, indications, and complications—among members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Shivamogga. The goal was to identify gaps and promote informed decision-making to enhance hematologic care. A survey was conducted using the SurveyMonkey platform and disseminated via WhatsApp. It explored four domains: General Awareness (25 questions) Ethical Considerations and Indications (15 questions) Procedure (10 questions) Complications (10 questions) Despite the comprehensive design, participation was minimal, with only 7 of 533 members responding. This limited dataset restricts meaningful statistical conclusions. Nevertheless, the findings highlight the urgent need for targeted educational initiatives, awareness campaigns, and counseling. By improving understanding of BMT and its complications, the medical community can empower patients and families to make informed choices, navigate the transplant process confidently, and ultimately enhance the quality of hematologic care.
