Abstract
This study empirically investigates the effects of soil layering on seismic soil-structure interaction (SSI) through a series of 1g shake table experiments. The methodology employed a uniaxial shake table, a scaled multi-story reinforced concrete frame structure, and several soil configurations, including homogeneous profiles of sand and clay, as well as multi-layered profiles combining sand, silt, and clay. The key results demonstrate that soil layering has a significant and detrimental impact on seismic performance, marked by substantially increased acceleration amplification at the structure's roof, larger foundation settlement, and pronounced period elongation of the soil-structure system. Multi-layered soil profiles were found to introduce complex dynamic responses, including impedance contrast effects at layer interfaces and the emergence of multiple resonance peaks in the frequency domain. These phenomena are not captured in conventional analyses that assume homogeneous soil conditions. The primary insight from this research is that overlooking the complexities of layered stratigraphy can lead to a significant underestimation of seismic demand. This underscores the critical need for detailed, site-specific SSI analysis in the seismic design of structures founded on multi-layered soil deposits.
