Abstract

ABSTRACT Is it sexist to use ‘guys’ when one means both gender? Or use Mr. for a woman member of the LGBTQ++? When people think that way, then the language could enforce injurious stereotypes. Could language be used to challenge prevailing norms and conventions, or could it be just a habit? These were the questions answered in this paper. Habit is viewed ‘a primary ontological occurrence necessary in shaping the person wholistically to become an agent of social change. To Cuffari (2020), “everything that a linguistic body does and thinks is conditioned by her linguistic habits”. Habits are knowingly or unknowingly routines and things done on a regular basis. They easily keep one going although demotivated when this has been a habit because the mind just takes that particular action as a “default thing to do” at a particular time of the day as things get automatic. They harden like concrete over time, and they compound. The mind absorbs and becomes a part of the daily experiences upon which it feeds (Practical Psychology, 2019). In language learning, this has been part of life and that even linguists could not determine the unique and universal about the language used, how it is acquired and how it could change over time. Scholars consider language as a cultural, social and psychological phenomenon. Based on Stanford Report in 2019, studying how people use language, the words and phrases they unconsciously choose and combine, whether gender-fair or not, could help better understand why they use the language the way they do. In this paper, the researcher examined painstakingly natural gender languages, grammatical gender languages, and genderless languages (McFarland, 2008) as gender-inclusive or non-inclusive Filipino, specifically Tagalog words and phrases to include their structure, their background and their implication, to draw conclusions from the identification of the words’ boundary conditions and obstacles for use. Using Discourse Analysis (DA) and on the bases of the three (3) language asymmetries mentioned above, discussions were made on whether and under what circumstances the asymmetries had contributed to the reduction of gender stereotyping and discrimination in the language particularly Tagalog texts structures. The researcher attempted to provide useful bases for future studies.
