Abstract

Abstract The concept of disability has undergone significant changes over time, due to the shifting societal attitudes, advances in medicine and the emergence of disability rights movements. In Indian English literature, we can trace the elements of the intersectional approach to disability, which recognises that disability is not experienced in isolation; rather, it intersects with other social identities, such as race, class, and gender. This paper examines the intersection of disability and subalternity, utilising Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's framework to reveal how the subaltern space occupied by disabled individuals reflects broader disenfranchised groups. Subaltern theory has increasingly adopted intersectionality to address issues of racism, sexism, classicism, etc. The issue of disability often hovers around subalternity. In this paper, I attempt to envisage the intersection of disability with subalternity and to answer how disabled characters are frequently constructed as subaltern figures, positioned at the centre of societal marginalisation. Disabled people are forced to endure double oppression, as their physical realities and social exclusions are compounded by hierarchies of caste, class, and gender. Their voices remain silenced or appropriated due to the power dynamics operating upon them, which further creates a critical gap in subaltern studies. In this context, Anita Desai's Clear Light of Day serves as a pivotal text, exemplifying multiple marginalities tied to disability and representation. Baba's intellectual disability and his persistent silence throughout the novel underscore how social and systemic oppression erodes individual subjectivity and agency, relegating disabled individuals to the periphery of societal narratives. By analysing Baba's character, this paper attempts to explore how disability is intertwined with subalternity and highlights the urgent need to improve policies and practices that address the complex needs of disabled individuals. Despite these intersections of marginalisation and disability, the novel suggests that individuals like Baba and Bimla can resist and challenge dominant norms, exercising expectations, agency, and autonomy in their own lives. This paper also emphasizes the need to promote inclusive and equitable practices among disabled people so that they can overcome the stigma and isolation into which they are immersed.
