Abstract
This study assessed the level of performance in English of the Grade 3 learners in Don Florencio P. Buan Elementary School, Tarlac West B District, Tarlac City Schools Division during the school year 2023-2024 as basis for the development of worksheets through the quantitative-descriptive research design. The quantitative-descriptive research design was used to present the level of performance of the Grade 3 learners based on their final ratings in English for school year 2023-2024. It was also utilized to look into the weaknesses in English of the Grade 3 learners. Based on the findings, worksheets were proposed to enhance the level of performance in English of the Grade 3 learners. The developed worksheets were evaluated by experts as to their acceptability in terms of content, quality of presentation and physical make-up. The study was conducted in Don Florencio P. Buan Elementary School, Tarlac West B District, Tarlac City Schools Division with the English teachers and their school head as respondents. They provided pertinent information to answer the sub-problems raised in the study, particularly on the acceptability of the proposed worksheets in terms of the set criteria. Subjects of the study were 67 Grade 3 learners. Weighted mean was utilized in the study to treat the data statistically. Summary of Findings: 1.0 Level of Performance in English of the Grade 3 Learners There were 45 Grade 3 learners or 67.16% who obtained final ratings in English of 90-100% interpreted as “advanced” performance. There were 11 Grade 3 learners or 16.42% who obtained final ratings in English of 85-89% interpreted as “proficient” performance. Six Grade 3 learners or 8.96% obtained final ratings in English of 80-84% interpreted as “approaching proficiency” performance. There were 3 Grade 3 learners or 4.48% who obtained final ratings in English of 75-79% interpreted as “developing” performance. There were 2 Grade 3 learners or 2.98% who obtained final ratings in English of below 75% interpreted as “beginning” performance. 2.0 Weaknesses in English of the Grade 3 Learners The weaknesses in English of the Grade 3 learners were the following: Restate facts from informational texts (72.34%); Identify effects based on a given cause (70.68%); Use the degrees of adjectives in making comparisons (68.24%); Use different kinds of sentences in a dialogue (67.46); Use common and proper nouns in a sentence (64.22%); Interpret simple graphs, tables and pictographs (63.30); Use plural form of frequently occurring irregular nouns (61.82%); Compare and contrast information heard (60.52%); Make inferences and draw conclusions based on texts (56.90%); and Use plural form of regular nouns (53.72%). 3.0 Proposed Worksheets in English Worksheets in English for Grade 3 learners were proposed to enhance their level of performance. 4.0 Acceptability of the Developed Worksheets in English In terms of content, weighted means from the perceptions of the English teachers and their school head were 4.39 and 5.00, respectively, for descriptive equivalent of “very acceptable” as perceived by the teachers and “highly acceptable” as perceived by the school head. In terms of quality of presentation, weighted means were 4.25 from the perceptions of the English teachers and 4.00 from their school head for descriptive equivalent of “very acceptable” as perceived by both respondents. In terms of physical make-up, the English teachers and their school head perceived the proposed worksheets to be “very acceptable” with weighted means of 4.25 and 4.00, respectively. The overall weighted means were 4.30 from the English teachers and 4.33 from the school head with descriptive equivalent for both of “very acceptable.” Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. Most of the Grade 3 learners have advanced level of performance in English which indicates that they have a very high level of understanding of concepts and skills in English. 2. Weaknesses in English of the Grade 3 learners are restating facts from informational texts, identifying effects based on a given cause and using the degrees of adjectives in making comparisons. 3. Worksheets in English were proposed for the Grade 3 learners to enhance their level of academic performance. 4. The proposed worksheets in English are very acceptable based on the evaluation of experts. Based on the findings and the conclusions drawn, the following recommendations were offered: 1. The proposed worksheets in English should be considered for use by Grade 3 learners to enhance their level of performance. 2. The developed worksheets should be tried out on a wider scale for further improvement. 3. Teachers should be encouraged to develop instructional materials particularly on subject/ topics where most learners encounter difficulties. 4. The school administration should provide support in the production of the materials developed by teachers. 5. Other researchers may conduct similar studies on a wider scope to validate the findings of the study.
