Abstract
Hyperlipidemia, a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, has garnered significant attention for its management through natural remedies. Various crude drugs, including ginger (Zingiber officinale), guggul (Commiphora mukul), green tea (Camellia sinensis), hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa), and red yeast rice (Monascus purpureus), have shown promising antihyperlipidemic effects. These natural agents act through diverse mechanisms such as inhibition of cholesterol synthesis, enhancement of lipid metabolism, and antioxidant activities. Ginger and guggul are known to reduce total cholesterol and triglycerides, while green tea catechins promote LDL reduction and antioxidant defense. Hibiscus sabdariffa demonstrates lipid-lowering effects through polyphenols and anthocyanins, and red yeast rice contains monacolin K, a natural statin-like compound. The present study reviews the pharmacological potential and mechanisms of these crude drugs in managing hyperlipidemia, suggesting their potential as complementary therapies to conventional lipid-lowering agents.
