Abstract
The study titled "Impact of Rutenderi Solar Minigrid on the livelihoods of the households in remote areas of Kabarore Sector, Gatsibo District, Rwanda" examines the socio-economic, environmental, and developmental impacts of solar mini-grid technology on households, businesses, and social institutions in Rwanda. The main objectives of the study were to assess the socio-economic and environmental impacts of solar mini-grid energy access in remote areas, identify challenges and opportunities associated with its implementation, and evaluate its contribution to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7. The research used a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques, including questionnaires, field interviews, and documentation analysis, with a sample size of 238 respondents and interviews conducted with 11 leaders of social institutions benefiting from the Rutenderi Solar Mini-Grid. A pilot study was conducted to ensure the reliability of the data, achieving a Cronbach Alpha coefficient of 0.814. The study's findings reveal that the Rutenderi Solar Mini-Grid has had a significant positive impact on the region. In terms of socio-economic benefits, the mini-grid improved health services, enhanced educational opportunities, and increased business productivity, with 75% of businesses reporting greater productivity. The environmental impact was also positive, with a reduction in carbon emissions and a significant move towards sustainable energy, reflected in a mean response of 4.08 for environmental sustainability. However, challenges such as high initial costs for low-income households, affordability concerns for both households and businesses, and reliability issues during cloudy periods were identified. Despite these challenges, the study found considerable opportunities for growth, particularly in sectors like agriculture and local manufacturing, as well as empowering women with new income-generating activities. The Rutenderi Solar Mini-Grid was found to be an important contributor to SDG 7 by providing access to affordable and clean energy, and it significantly improved livelihoods in the region. Based on these findings, the study recommends that government institutions subsidize tariffs for both households and businesses, promote infrastructure development to support mini-grid systems, and implement policies for long-term sustainability. For solar mini-grid developers, the study suggests improving system reliability, reducing operational costs, and integrating user feedback into system development. It also encourages beneficiaries to adopt energy-efficient practices, participate in system maintenance, and advocate for fairer tariffs. Finally, the study calls for future research to conduct long-term impact assessments, explore cost-reduction strategies, and expand geographical coverage to understand the broader implications of solar mini-grids. Overall, the Rutenderi Solar Mini-Grid has shown a transformative impact, significantly contributing to socio-economic development, environmental sustainability, and the achievement of SDG 7.
