Urban air pollution is a pressing challenge, requiring innovative solutions for precise and dynamic monitoring. This project presents a proof-of-concept urban air quality monitoring system using a non-flying drone model to address the limitations of stationary monitoring stations. The system employs a mobile platform capable of collecting real-time environmental data, including particulate matter concentration, temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and air quality. The proposed system integrates advanced microcontroller-based architecture for data acquisition and wireless transmission. Using Arduino Mega as the primary controller and ESP32 for wireless data logging on IoT - ThingSpeak, the system ensures efficient processing and storage of environmental data. A suite of sensors—particulate matter sensors, BMP280 for pressure and altitude measurement, DHT22 for temperature and humidity, and MQ135 for air quality detection—enables comprehensive monitoring. The non-flying drone model, powered by DC motors with propellers and controlled via an L298 motor driver for speed modulation, simulates mobility in urban areas to enhance spatial coverage. This approach bridges the gap between static monitoring systems and the need for localized data collection at street levels. The collected data is visualized on ThingSpeak for analysis, enabling actionable insights into urban air quality management. This proof-of-concept demonstrates the potential of mobile ground-based systems to provide cost-effective, scalable solutions for urban air pollution monitoring.
