Abstract
Background: The manufacturing sector, traditionally seen as male-dominated and less diverse, is undergoing transformation as organizations recognize the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) for fostering equitable workplaces. DEI in manufacturing addresses systemic biases, promoting inclusive recruitment, unbiased performance management, and targeted development programs to drive organizational change. Objectives: This study investigates HR professionals' perceptions of DEI in manufacturing firms in Bangalore and Chennai, exploring the strategies, challenges, and effects of DEI initiatives on organizational outcomes. Materials and Methods: Using a descriptive research design, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with six HR professionals using purposive sampling. Participants shared experiences regarding DEI practices, policies, and challenges. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyze responses, identifying key themes on DEI implementation and cultural adaptation in the workplace. Results: Findings indicate that, while HR professionals acknowledge DEI's importance in recruitment and performance management, they face resistance to DEI adoption, especially from management, and inadequate participation in DEI activities. Despite challenges, DEI initiatives positively influence employee engagement, retention, and organizational innovation. Inclusive recruitment practices, cultural competency training, and unbiased job descriptions were particularly effective in promoting diversity. Conclusion: DEI initiatives are critical for fostering inclusive work environments in manufacturing. Structural integration of DEI and gradual cultural adaptation are essential for sustained impact on employee morale, talent retention, and organizational innovation. Further research with a broader sample is needed to understand DEI's long-term effects across diverse sectors.
