Java plum (Syzygium cumini), often referred to as jambolan, is a tropical tree known for its fruit and its longstanding application in traditional medicine. Jambolana, Eugenia Lam, sometimes referred to as jamun or black plum, is a significant medicinal herb utilized in a variety of conventional healing practices. Java plum has been shown to be effective in treating diarrhea, ulcers, inflammation, and diabetes mellitus. Additionally, studies that are preclinical suggest its potential for chemoprevention, radioprotection, and antitumor characteristics. Compounds like kaempferol, myricetin, isoquercetin, ellagic acid, glucosides, and anthocyanins are abundant in this plant. It is known that the seeds contain the glycoside jambolin, sometimes called antimellin, and the alkaloid jambosine, which help prevent starch from being converted to sugar. This review seeks to compile the existing knowledge regarding its traditional and medicinal uses. This review examines the pharmacological characteristics and medicinal uses of Java plum, focusing on its bioactive constituents, including anthocyanins, flavonoids, and tannins, which enhance its therapeutic efficacy. Research suggests that Java plum possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial effects. Its significance in diabetes management, particularly in regulating blood glucose levels, has attracted considerable interest. Furthermore, the review addresses its potential in treating gastrointestinal issues and promoting oral health. It underscores the necessity for additional clinical studies to substantiate these uses and to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms. In summary, Java plum represents a valuable opportunity for natural medicinal treatments, deserving of further investigation within contemporary pharmacology.
