Abstract
Hisat-e-Kulyah (kidney stone) is one of the most common urological diseases affecting almost 12 % population worldwide and about 2.3% population of India. Despite centuries of advancements, urinary stone disease still remains a prevalent urologic disorder. Each year billions of dollars are spent on nephrolithiasis-related activity, with the majority of expenditure on surgical treatment of existing stones. Kidney stone formation is a complex process involving physicochemical events like supersaturation, nucleation, growth, aggregation and retention with in the kidney. Various Unani Scholars like Ibn-e-Sina, Ibn-e-Abbas Majoosi, Ibn-e-Zohr, Zakaria Razi etc have described kidney stone in their classical literature. This comprehensive review provides integrative insights into the etiopathogenesis and the holistic management of kidney stones within the framework of Unani medicine. It systematically examines the multifaceted approach of Unani practices, which encompasses the identification of underlying imbalances in the body’s humors that contribute to stone formation. The paper reviews the role of Mawaleed-e-salasa (plant, mineral and animal source of drugs), dietary/lifestyle modifications and regimental therapies that Unani scholars have employed for centuries. Unani medicine, known for its cost-effective and non-invasive treatments, often presents a favourable profile with minimal side effects. Therefore keeping in mind these potential advantages, it is imperative that further empirical trials to be conducted to substantiate the efficacy of the various treatments discussed in Unani medicine, thereby reinforcing their value in the global healthcare system.
