Abstract
This research sheds light on the significant pricing disparity between urban and rural retailers in India, particularly in the distribution and sale of FMCGs (Fast-moving consumer goods). It reveals a complex distribution chain that varies by region, influenced by factors like infrastructure, consumer demand, and the nature of the goods themselves. The study highlights the challenges faced by rural retailers, including inefficient distribution networks, the burden of logistics costs, and the impact of middlemen, which collectively lead to higher retail prices in rural areas compared to urban ones. The analysis is grounded in a comprehensive survey covering both urban and rural retailers, focusing on the price comparison of select FMCGs across Delhi NCR, West Uttar Pradesh, and South Uttarakhand. The solution proposed aims to address these challenges by reducing costs and eliminating middlemen, thus narrowing the urban-rural pricing gap. This study analyzes the social and economic consequences of this solution.
