Abstract
The Indian handicraft reflects the heritage and the diverse culture of India. Odisha , a state on east coast of India, is renowned for its handicrafts and artistic excellence through its artisans' skills in fine stone carving, traditional Pattachitra, sand art, silver filigree, and the renowned Pipli applique work. However, the number of Pipli artisans has drastically declined over the past few years, and struggling to sustain their livelihood. The strength of this industry lies in low capital investment, affordable labour, and the use of local resources, leading to its significant contribution to India’s exports and foreign exchange, making it a crucial part of our economy. The lack of resources to procure raw materials, mainly textiles, led to the dilution & cheaper versions of Pipli craft that compromised the identity. On the environmental front, textile waste is the second-largest polluter, with around 1 million tons of waste ending up in landfills annually. India, being one of the top five apparel manufacturing countries, it plays a significant role in the global fast fashion industry, exporting garments primarily to Europe and the US. The research intends to establish a solution through design where the resources for raw materials for Pipli craft and waste utilization of the garment industry can be managed together as products for the lifestyle sector. The primary objective of this study is to understand the usage of textile waste generated from Garment manufacturing units in Odisha as an alternative solution as raw material by the artisans for the Pipli craft. A carefully considered assortment of lifestyle goods is created to complete the study using the main and secondary surveys, testing, and prototype techniques. The artisans of Odisha have created a line of lifestyle goods using the appliqué method of Pipli craft. The textile waste from the garment manufacturing industry from the same region has been utilized to address the issue of raw material availability. The design solution acts as a catalyst to create a win-win situation for both industries and as a sustainable model for the community for the craft's livelihood.
