Abstract
The intersectionality of violence perpetuated by patriarchy against women, especially the black women, has been predominantly seen as a site of representation and resistance by Morrison in her writings. How and why she does it, and to what effect, has been a matter of debate and discussion in the intellectual circles which appears to be a never receding one. In the company of women, the characters feel at home to “heal” the ills being meted out to them by patriarchy. They can address their woes and seek strength from being in the company of women which in turn would help them assert their individuality from where representation and resistance becomes an easy-to-cope-with affair. Healing in the company of women becomes a familiar trope for the protagonists which can be traced in the three whores in The Bluest Eye, Alice and Viola’s proximity in Jazz; Sethe in Beloved also regains strength in the company of women. The convent women in Paradise foreground the role of healers empowering the protagonists to represent themselves through a rearguard action. The paper attempts to explore how healing becomes a site of representation and resistance for women protagonists in Pulitzer prize winning novel Paradise(1998). Neither violence nor apathy of patriarchy can affect the strong affinity the women enjoy in each other’s company. Key Words: Violence, representation, resistance, patriarchy, the convent.
